Bass player for YOU SAY PARTY, Executive Director of The Arts Council of New Westminster, extreme NewWestie, and may be found hugging concrete.

INSTAGRAM: Fulfilling my love of architecture, modernism, and lots of concrete, I follow Socialist Modernism (http://www.instagram.com/socialistmodernism) for their unique perspective on

TWITTER: For all things local , the go-to source remains (twitter.com/pjnewwest). Model Councillor, provocative rabble-rouser aka Patrick Johnstone

HEALTH HACK: Drink more water, you're likely not drinking enough. And neither am I.

FAVOURITE THINK ABOUT MY NEIGHBOURHOOD: Old Crow Coffee Co. (http://oldcrowcoffeeco.com/), perfect hole-in-the-wall coffee shop on Front Street. My favourite place for meetings or just on my own.

MUSIC: I'm always recommending this album. One of my favourite bands is Do Make Say Think (official). Their album Goodbye Enemy Airship, The Landlord Is Dead (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWAGmn50m04) is a perfect slap of instrumental post-rock. Canadian too!

WHAT I'M READING: Amity by Nasreen Pejvak (https://www.inanna.ca/catalog/amity/), President of Royal City Literary Arts Society (https://rclas.com/) and Finalist for the 2016 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize.

FAVORITE LOCAL EATS: Can't stop going back to Re-Up BBQ for their breakfast sandwich. I order my egg "Over Hard" to avoid the hot yolk splash and go with the sausage. Delicious any time of day....AND THAT BISCUIT!

NETFLIX: Tired of listening to all those Western scales? Get out of your normal and explore "Sufi Soul: The Mystic Music of Islam" (https://www.netflix.com/watch/70105236)

WHAT I'M DOING: Busy working with Arts Council of New Westminster (www.acnw.ca) coming up with new and exciting ways to bring the arts to New Westminster. Want to do something different? Let's collaborate!

HIDDEN SPOT IN MY NEIGHBOURHOOD: It won't be there for much longer but don't miss the pop-up outdoor art gallery along the fence between the train tracks and the parking lot near Begbie Street. (https://goo.gl/maps/yGrLw7kDSnS2)

Have you ever been to a show by Vagabond Players at The Bernie Legge Theatre ?? If not, it might be because the Legge theatre/building is almost hidden in Queens Park.

If you've been before, tell us what you saw!

Did you know that New Westminster has a electric car company that sells its cars worldwide?

They're located just steps from the Braid/Brunette intersection

Jerry Kroll has been in the racing car business for years. He used his knowledge of designing those driving experiences to come up with a single seat commuter car for the mainstream buyer. The company is now taking orders and hopes to make and sell 200,000 of them in 2017.

New West has a ton of history, so much so, we can often glaze over it when we see it or hear about it.

Taking the time to learn about the history, of any city, can teach you a lot about why a city is made up the way it is. New wests long history has clearly contributed to the community it is today.

Here's a read on a time when the Fraser River was skateable.

The Rundown Project - We ask residents to give us their current favourites and current recommendations for their community. The first up is the Sapperton Resident, Editor of Tenth to the Fraser and recently declared New Westminster Citizen of the Year - Jen Arbo

INSTAGRAM: I spend time looking at terrariums online and usually follow a variety of hashtags to find those like

FAVOURITE BEER: There is no way on this earth I can pick only one. Currently, I’m loving sour beers and am so pleased to see so many breweries get on board to make one. I like pretty much everything Driftwood Brewery(Victoria), Dageraad Brewing (Burnaby), and Four Winds Brewing Co. (Delta) produce and I think the beers and staff at New West’s own Steel & Oak Brewing Co. are amazing.

FAVOURITE THING ABOUT YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD: I love that my neighbourhood is right beside Hume Park, which is what I’d rank as the best park in New West. I know splashy Queen’s Park gets a lot of love, and the Westminster Pier Park is award winning and a great place to take your tourist friends, but Hume Park is a gem. It features walking trails, bike paths, activity fields, lacrosse boxes, tennis courts, a fairly new playground and water park, geocaching, direct access to the Brunette River for tossing rocks, a treat hut, a summertime pool…. you name it. On weekends it is packed with people from other communities—I swear New Westers don’t realize how great this park is.

MANTRA: Fake it till you make it.

HEALTH HACK: Go to the gym even when the idea makes you want to curl into a ball. You’ll feel so good afterward. Water. Supplements. Go the eff to bed. Turn off your phone.

NETFLIX: Loving Stranger Things, The Crown, and Black Mirror right now.

PODCAST: Revisionist History, Someone Knows Something, Serial.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP ADVICE: TL;DR: Give ‘er. Long version: get the support of your loved ones, take risks, plan.

DOCUMENTARY: Just started watching “Africa” on Netflix with my son. Loving it so far.

NEW DISCOVERY: Deadlifting is awesome. I joined Strong Side Conditioning Gym a few months ago and have enjoyed learning how to lift. Never done it before in my life, but feel strong and capable now.

HIDDEN SPOT IN NEIGHBOURHOOD: The Sapperton Parklet! These temporary park like places are a lovely place to rest and relax. Sapperton is fortunate enough to have one, right outside some of the key businesses creating change in this hood: Fratelli Bakery, Cadeaux Boutique & Day Spa, The Bloom Bloom Room Flower Studio, Barley's Homebrewing Supplies, Banana Lab., Kids In Motion Dance Studio…. Sapperton is becoming a more robust shopping area, finally.

Affordability seems to make New Westminster a perfect place for a lot of new businesses to call home. So it's not uncommon to stumble across some pretty unique stores or business ideas.

Which brings me to a new business on Front st. Hive City is a unique business that has a couple of things going for it. The Location is one of my favourites. They have coffee. And they have some machinery that works with D-board, a sustainable cardboard product. Check their site out for more info. http://www.hive.city

They are also community focused. "100% of our profits will be given back to New West and beyond in social, non-profit, and start-up funding and disbursements. The more successful we are as a business, the more we have to give and to build up the community. This is what excites us."

This only contributes to an amazing city.
