Community Harvest Basket Together Week #14 with The Sharing Farm!

This week our participant Khadija received the basket and had this feedback to share about high food prices and our Community basket together program:

"My favorite veggie in this basket is the eggplant. I plan to make some traditional recipes and some soups. High food prices are affecting us significantly - our groceries that used to cost around $90 now often cost over $200. Receiving the basket reduces our grocery cost by about $40 for the week, which is a big help.

I love this program - it takes a bit of burden off my weekly stress of buying fresh produce. I would also like to get back into participating with more of RWRC's upcoming workshops as well!"

Thank you Khadija - we love to have join us at workshops and programs anytime!

Catching Up!
We have been thinking a lot about the Seniors in our community recently.

On September 8, our friends at the Richmond Olympic Oval hosted the 10th Anniversary of the "Forever Young" 8k annual running event. This year, over 280 participants aged 55+ showed dedication, energy and heart and inspired us all to keep moving and stay active!

Our Board Co-Chair Traci (who also serves on the Richmond Olympic Oval Board) was privileged to join City Councilors Andy Hobbs,
Councilor Chak Au 區澤光 - Richmond City Council and Evan Dunfee to celebrate with the amazing participants. Such an inspiring day and Huge Congratulations to each and every participant!

At the same time we were also busy completing our "New Horizons" Federal grant. This grant provides funding to local organizations like RWRC for programs & services to help make a difference in the lives of Seniors in our community. We will have to wait to until next year to hear if our application was successful, but we wanted to thank MP Wilson Miao and Vancouver Premier College President Dr Kevin Nagel for providing us strong support letters to give our application (and our RWRC seniors) the very best chance for success. We sincerely appreciate your help & support!

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival - part 2!

In the spirit of celebrating a bountiful harvest and to ensure our participants had a good family celebration afterwards - we were so lucky that Evergreen Herbs Farm donated 20 (!!) fresh, large veggie boxes for all our participants to take home! Evergreen Herbs is a local, family founded Farm focused on sustainability, quality and innovation in the food space. We were very touched by this very generous gift, which was much appreciated by all our participants! Thank you very much Evergreen Herbs LTD!

We also want to thank our wonderful volunteer Alan who travelled out to the Farm and (somehow!) got all 20 large veggie boxes up to the 3rd floor of the Caring Place! We don't know quite how he did it, but we were happy to see he was still smiling afterwards! And our thanks again to Henry Yao, MLA for Richmond South Centre 姚君憲, 列治文 南中區 省議員 for Celebrating the Festival with us and helping to distribute the veggie boxes.
We also enjoyed lunch together, and had a lucky draw for a fruit basket.

For some this was a chance to enjoy a familiar Celebration and tradition - for others - a chance to experience Moon Festival for the first time. Heartfelt thanks to everyone for coming out and making it such a memorable and fun community gathering!

We can't wait for next year!

Our Mid-Autumn Moon Festival Celebration was so much fun!

We were honored to have our Richmond Centre MLA Henry Yao, MLA for Richmond South Centre 姚君憲, 列治文 南中區 省議員 visit us. MLA Yao is a life member of RWRC, a former dedicated RWRC volunteer and always a great supporter for us and for women in our community. MLA Yao offered warm greetings to launch the Celebration and then joined in to learn how to make snow skin moon cakes! Our Board Co-Chair Jenny lead the group in moon-cake making - we think they turned out great!

We had lunch and laughter and so much fun, we can't catch all the pics in one post - more to come! It was truly wonderful to be able to come together with our community to celebrate this special Festival!

Thank you to MLA Yao and all our wonderful participants for making this a special day!

Community Harvest Basket Together Week #13!

We were so fortunate all summer to have wonderful volunteer Jonathan travel out to the The Sharing Farm each week to pick up our harvest basket - we are excited to share that Jonathan has started University and relocated to Alberta! We are thrilled that Jonathan is studying Nursing - we really miss him, but we know it is not "good-bye" and we will see him again, and can't wait to hear about his academic adventures!

And didn't leave us without help - above and beyond the call of duty - Jonathan recruited his Dad Alan to do the veggie pickups for us for the remainder of the season! We have the best volunteers! Heartfelt thanks to and Dad Alan for your dedicated support!

This week, our participant Lillian received the harvest basket, and Lillian had this to share about high food prices and our program:

"Thank you so much for the basket of fresh veggies. I love them all actually and find that they are really fresher and different from the ones in the supermarket. High food prices have meant we eat more frozen veggies and only choose the ones on discount.

My family and I enjoyed the sweet strawberry and fresh salad with the radish. We also enjoyed the lovely beans, potatoes and cabbage salad. I like this program and I think it will help people not only to have healthy food but also a good mood! Could you please share with me the pictures and I will show how lucky I am to my friends".

Thank you Lillian, we are lucky to know you & appreciate your feedback!

And just like that, our RWRC Beginner's Women's Cycling Series has come to an end! But what a fun and inspiring introduction to the wonderful world of women's group cycling it has been! We have so many people to thank:

We never would have connected to our amazing "coach extra-ordinaire" without the help of and ben_chaddock. Siobhann is an amazing coach - so experienced, supportive, encouraging and kind - we learned so much and could not have done it without her!

We also had an incredible volunteer sweep rider - long-time community supporter and realtor - thank you Patti for being an essential part of this series. Of course, we needed bikes & helmets - we were so lucky to have excellent support, fits, help and encouragement from manager .burns at . Thank you Graeme!

Making the final ride extra special, before they pedalled off thru beautiful Steveston Village MLA Kelly Greene took time to visit the group to congratulate them & recognize their achievements.
We were also happy to learn that more bike lanes are coming to Richmond! Thank you for your advocacy for projects like this and always supporting us .

To celebrate their achievement in completing the series, our cyclists made their way to Sanctuary cycling cafe to enjoy a delicious coffee together.

Finally, thanks again to our funder, Richmond Community Foundation for making this possible, and the RWRC admin team, Betty and Jasmine - for keeping everything organized.
We knew more men than women were participating with group cycling and women were missing out on the potential health, social & other benefits. We are so thankful for this incredible community of people who came together to make this pilot series a success!

Sure hope there will be more group cycling in our future! Heartfelt thanks to one and all!

Catching Up! Our Community Harvest basket together program has been ongoing through busy August.

With our Harvest Basket together program, RWRC was able to pre-purchase and then gift a large veggie basket to a participant in our community each week. We have heard from recipients that they have enjoyed trying new and different veggies, and that the basket has helped with high grocery costs. We also wanted to support and promote awareness about the great work done by our friends at the .

A few more weeks left in the season! If you are interested to find out more about this or any of our RWRC programs please reach out - 604 279 7060 or [email protected]

Last Wednesday was week #3 of our Beginner's Group cycling for women. Although the sun wasn't bright, the spirits of our participants certainly were!

After meeting up at in Steveston for bikes and helmets, the group reviewed Group ride etiquette; Paceline; Single Rotating Paceline Group Riding and previous skills with expert and supportive Coach Siobhann - thank you, Siobhann!

And then, of course, a group cycling ride in beautiful Steveston!
